Enhanced Adobe Media Encoding
HelmutIO introduces an innovative new rendering workflow for Adobe Media Encoder CC, developed in response to growing demand from broadcasting organisations and production houses for a more efficient way to utilise editing capacity. In the past, editing workstations often came to a standstill during time-consuming ingest and export operations. Now, MoovIT’s HelmutIO solution frees up valuable time for productive creative work. Clips and full sequences are exported directly out of Adobe Premiere Pro CC or After Effects CC to separate workstations, servers or a server farm. In addition, user- and project-dependent presets can be used to manage target formats, folders and metadata – helping users to organise their central storage effectively.
How is HelmutIO designed?
HelmutIO comprises of a server to manage transcoding profiles, render settings and preferences, plus a panel extension for Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Adobe After Effects CC.
The server can be installed on Windows and can be run as VMware.
All rendering and transcoding jobs are distributed by the server across the available render nodes. Users can choose to utilise available editing workstations within the post-production environment, or dedicated servers.
Profiles can be defined to control exactly which jobs are performed on specific workstations or render nodes; alternatively, the server can be set to assign jobs autonomously. Each workstation and render node is integrated via the AME Connector, which runs in the background on the corresponding machine. The AME Connector informs the server whether a given workstation/render node is currently in use, or available to complete a transcoding task. As a result, idle editing workstations can be added into the render farm automatically – at night, for example.
HelmutIO is designed to effectively control Adobe Media Encoder while also significantly expanding its functionality.
The tool allows import and export processes to be executed using the panel extension or via watch folders (either local or FTP watch folders may be used).
Profiles are created for every type of import and export process. These profiles specifically define the data source and target location, and the transcoding preset (AME.epr) which will be used to process the files.
Furthermore, freely configurable metadata sets can be assigned to each profile; these can either be created by the user or imported automatically. Metadata from EditShare Flow and other MAM/PAM solutions can be automatically imported and used for further processing.
The server is fully configurable via an HTML5 web interface, and offers monitoring functionality that includes features such as priority assignment, abort and delay functions for ongoing jobs, and the option to restart individual AME instances on the render nodes. The panel features an auto-import function which automatically processes each clip that is imported into an open Premiere project, based on a defined profile. Here, too, the user is able to transfer metadata, edit clip names and perform encoding tasks.
How easy is HelmutIO to use?
The program has a straightforward design and is easy to learn. There is no need for extensive training.
With HelmutIO's process handling, operators and users no longer have to think about which transcoding settings are being used for import or export, or about which volume or folders the files should be saved to. Moreover, there is no need to know which format the sound or graphics department will receive. Most significantly of all, the user no longer needs to wait until transcoding or rendering processes have successfully completed.
Users will benefit from the automated coordination and organisation of files. And thanks to a user-friendly interface tailored to their specific needs, they will be free to concentrate exclusively on their core tasks.
A MAM/PAM system can only perform as well as it is maintained. If structures and metadata can be managed easily and effectively, the process of retrieving assets will become easier and more efficient, too.
HelmutIO's Flow module adds new functionality by integrating EditShare Media Spaces as a source and target location for assets. As a result, HelmutIO is able to check these assets in to the MAM system automatically. During this process, metadata is transferred, proxies are generated and assets are saved to pre-defined folders. To ensure this process is as straightforward as possible, all types of metadata templates can be imported from the Flow MAM at the touch of a button, for immediate use in HelmutIO profiles.
Finally, metadata can also be used within Flow to trigger transcoding or export processes from the MAM, with the process handled via a HelmutIO profile. To ensure high efficiency, HelmutIO makes use of all available render nodes for this task.
